Recovery is long, and motivation flags when progress feels invisible. Concrete numbers—an asymmetry gap narrowing, walking speed climbing toward a functional threshold—give patients something real to hold onto and clinicians a clearer way to explain where things stand. Standardized measurement also travels well across a care team, so a physical therapist, physician, and the patient are reading the same trajectory rather than trading impressions.

None of this replaces clinical judgment; the experienced eye still reads quality of movement in ways a metric doesn't. But objective, consistent measurement makes the underlying trend legible, so the judgment is applied to a clearer picture of how recovery is actually unfolding.
